The Bartles papers. II, 1770-1946.

This collection (1770-1940) consists largely of court dockets, deeds, articles of agreement, account information, and correspondence related to Charles Bartles, his law practice, and his family. Also includes deeds, account information, surveys, and correspondence centering on several State of New Jersey writs, an 1836 articles of agreement document between Jacob Rockafellow and the Neshanic Mining Company, and two letters from the Civil War era, one in which Charles Bartles agrees to pay for uniforms and India rubber blankets for Flemington volunteers, and the other in which five volunteers fighting in the war confront him about his promise to care for their families. Also includes prominent lawyer John Bryan's manuscripts (1778-1822) consisting largely of deeds, articles of agreement, maps, account information, and correspondence. Of particular interest are materials regarding an eighteenth-century divorce, the sale of slaves in the early 1800s, a blacksmith business partnership including "Negro" work, the running of a distillery, and details regarding the lime industry.

Charles Bartles was born in New Germantown, N.J., on March 18, 1801. After graduating from Union College in Schenectady, New York, he studied law at the office of Nathaniel Saxton in 1822. Bartles married Eliza Hart of Flemington in 1833 and had four children, Mary, William H., Charles Jr., and George. From his second marriage to Eliza E.
